By Christine Lavosky
This piece was an experiment in pattern-work, repetition and movement. I basically wanted to see how many patterns I could fit into one piece while still leading in the eye in a specific direction, not an over-stimulated “all over the place” game of eye-tag. I was inspired to make this piece by Rina Deguchi’s intricate pattern work. More conceptually when I was finished it, I was intrigued by the fact that if I took out one tiny part it would look almost exactly the same. No singe part except for the dragon really matters in its own right in the piece. All the other parts are only functional within the piece as a whole. They’re just a cog in the great machine of the piece. The dragon in the middle, the only important one is orchestrating it all, knowing that he is superior to all the tiny designs around him and had power over them.
Christine Lavosky is a Writing, Literature and Publishing Sophomore from Northern New Jersey. In addition to being a writer for Isis she is the editor-in-chief of a visual art and literature magazine currently in its infancy, The Emerson Eye. In her free moments she loves knitting somewhat lopsided hats and frolicking through The Garden!
