This story is about an experience brought upon by smoking a drug called salvia divinorum. If you wish to know more about the drug, check out my informative article here: http://bit.ly/ZsU4BW
The first time I smoked salvia, it was 20x strength and I smoked it out of a pipe. The only effects were a rushing sensation in my head and a slight aftermath of pessimism. Looking back, I can blame the low strength and the pipe for the weak effects I experienced. 20x is considered a beginner’s strength, and it’s recommended that salvia is smoked out of a water pipe to deliver a larger hit that induces full effects.
The second time I smoked salvia, however, was quite the opposite. I smoked 30x instead which is considered a moderate dose and smoked it out of a “parachute,” which is basically a contraption that fills a two liter bottle up with smoke. This
combination resulted in my first, and perhaps most vivid salvia trip.
It was 9 p.m. in the summer, and I was with my brother and his friend. I was going into my sophomore year of high school, and they had just graduated. We drove to a local hill that was covered in tall grass, and walked up the mowed path blefore
us. We arrived at the top of the hill where there was a circle of the grass mowed around a lone apple tree. We all sat around this tree and proceeded to pack the parachute.
My brother’s friend, Rodney, took the first hit of the salvia. After he took the hit, he started laughing hard and lay down to close his eyes. It was my turn next, so I took the hit and lay down just as Rodney had. What happened next seemed to happen as fast as a dream – what took place seemed to happen over a long span of time, but the whole thing still went rather quickly.
As I lay back onto the grass and looked up at the tree, I noticed that the sky behind the tree lost definition and started to look cartoony, as if it were a blue rectangular plane of pure color. The leaves on the tree took the shape of cartoon
lily pads, and before I knew it, it was as though I was lying down on the sky looking down at lily pads on calm, bright blue water. I realized that I was having very real visuals, and started laughing in delight as I closed my eyes.
Upon closing my eyes, I started to visualize what looked like a South American village at night. I was flying low over this village, and I could see a bunch of identical huts that were all glowing from the inside, as if they were all having internal fires. I focused in on one hut and noticed that a complex, colorful smoke was emerging from its entrance. Along with its emergence came a sound that sounded like wind slowly picking up. As the smoke cloud got bigger, I noticed that it was me in smoke form.
At this point I opened my eyes and saw a fly by my face. The fly was moving very slowly, much slower than I thought flies could possibly move, but just as I thought this, the fly turned into an infinite amount of flies on a linear line, as if I
was seeing every frame of its flight. I looked up at my brother who still hadn’t taken his hit yet. He was sitting cross-legged, smiling at the sight of his brother and friend enjoying their trips. The only difference here was that he appeared to
be holding a glowing orb of light in his hand, which I knew we didn’t have in our possession. My brother, Rodney, and I started laughing really hard and I proceeded to close my eyes again and lie back down.
Eventually I opened my eyes and felt pretty much sober again. I checked my phone and it had been exactly 15 minutes, which was just as long as I had read a salvia trip would last. Rodney was also done tripping, and my brother seemed to be coming down too. I looked out at the sunset and saw a striking array of blue and orange shades. It seemed as though every possible shade of orange and blue was present in this sunset, to the point where it looked like I was looking at pallete of each color.
Overall, the experience was mystical and visually profound. I had never been so outside of my body and seemingly submerged into an alternate reality before. I experienced no fear the entire time, and laughed a lot. I notice that every
time I trip salvia, I build up an insane, cackling laugh that seems to be coming from someone else. I have thought before that it’s as if an ancient spirit is temporarily possessing me and bringing me on a trip of its desire.
I think this trip went so well for a number of reasons. First off, it was in a perfect setting. I was with people I was very comfortable with, and I was off on a hill surround by nature, right where the salvia came from. Also, I just laid back and let the salvia do its thing. I didn’t try to walk around, act normal, or stop what was happening. I just laughed at first due to exhilaration, then due to the salvia. I think it was this open, respective, and submissive attitude towards the salvia that
allowed the trip to flow so smoothly.
If anyone wants to try salvia for the first time, or again, after reading this, then I suggest he or she follows similar guidelines. Be outside, be with trustworthy friends, take one large hit of the salvia, sit still, and close your eyes. If you adhere to these rules, then there is a high chance that you'll have as fearless and compelling of an experience as I did.
